In Nepal

Nepal has an alarmingly low literacy rate and education is not readily accessible, especially in remote areas of the country.

In addition to the Bamboo Schools, Karuna-Shechen is now supporting other education programs in Nepal.

The Himalayan Children's Society (established in 1999 in Nepal) works in the Humla region to develop educational resources in the district, including housing for children and teachers and initiatives to encourage families to enroll their children (particularly girls) in school. Karuna-Shechen has partnered with them to expand a hostel adjacent to the only school and to build additional classrooms. This will allow 100 more children to attend school. A generous donation from the Resnais Rotary Club in Belgium will cover the school fees of the 100 additional students and other expenses.

Funds are still needed to expand the hostel and build classrooms, a dining room, and a kitchen.

Karuna-Shechen is also partnering with Namaste Banepa to bring education to children in the Banepa region.
