Health Education

Health Education Outreach Programs are an essential part of primary health care and disease prevention. According to the WHO 2003 assessmen “If humanitarian associations were more preoccupied by health education among poor populations, 30% of diseases could be avoided in the world.”

Shechen Medical Centre and Mobile Clinic in India implements preventive health care in twelve adopted villages by training three village coordinators and twelve female "motivators" from within the village. In turn they train groups of villagers to teach health education, sanitation, and good hygiene to families. The village coordinators make home visits. This has resulted in a significant improvement in the health of the population as they apply what they learn to their daily lives.

In Nepal, Shechen Clinic brings health education to nine schools in urban areas of Kathmandu. It organizes medical and dental camps and teaches personal and dental hygiene. Hearing check-ups and hepatitis testing are also offered to the students. This is a direct and efficient way to reach many poor children who have no other way to get tested and learn about hygiene and disease prevention. To date, we have conducted over 180 camps and served almost 7,000 people.
